A new servant must learn a whole household of ridiculous private names for everyday things, then remember them all in an emergency.
A girl once went to the fair to hire herself for servant. At last a funny-looking old gentleman engaged her, and took her home to his house. When she got there, he told her that he had something to teach her, for that in his house he had his own names for things.
Uma moça foi certa vez à feira para se contratar como criada. Por fim, um velho senhor de aparência engraçada a contratou, e a levou para sua casa. Quando ela chegou lá, ele disse que tinha algo para lhe ensinar, pois em sua casa ele tinha seus próprios nomes para as coisas.
He said to her: “What will you call me?”
Ele disse a ela: "Como você vai me chamar?"
“Master or mister, or whatever you please sir,” says she.
"Patrão, ou senhor, ou o que o senhor preferir", disse ela.
He said: “You must call me 'master of all masters.' And what would you call this?” pointing to his bed.
Ele disse: "Você deve me chamar de 'patrão de todos os patrões.' E como você chamaria isto?", apontando para a cama.
“Bed or couch, or whatever you please, sir.”
"Cama ou leito, ou o que o senhor preferir, senhor."
“No, that's my 'barnacle.' And what do you call these?” said he pointing to his pantaloons.
"Não, essa é a minha 'concha.' E como você chama estas?", disse ele apontando para as suas calças.
“Breeches or trousers, or whatever you please, sir.”
"Calças ou bombachas, ou o que o senhor preferir, senhor."
“You must call them 'squibs and crackers.' And what would you call her?” pointing to the cat.
"Você deve chamá-las de 'pipocas e traques.' E como você chamaria ela?" apontando para a gata.
“Cat or kit, or whatever you please, sir.”
"Gata ou bichana, ou o que o senhor preferir, senhor."
“You must call her 'white-faced simminy.' And this now,” showing the fire, “what would you call this?”
"Você deve chamá-la de 'carinha-branca.' E isto agora", mostrando o fogo, "como você chamaria isto?"
“Fire or flame, or whatever you please, sir.”
"Fogo ou chama, ou o que o senhor preferir, senhor."
“You must call it 'hot cockalorum,' and what this?” he went on, pointing to the water.
"Você deve chamá-lo de 'quente-chispa', e isto?", continuou ele, apontando para a água.
“Water or wet, or whatever you please, sir.”
"Água ou molhado, ou o que o senhor preferir, senhor."
“No, 'pondalorum' is its name. And what do you call all this?” asked he, as he pointed to the house.
"Não, 'lagoalonga' é o nome dela. E como você chama tudo isto?", perguntou ele, apontando para a casa.
“House or cottage, or whatever you please, sir.”
"Casa ou choça, ou o que o senhor preferir, senhor."
“You must call it 'high topper mountain.'”
"Você deve chamá-la de 'montanha-mais-alta.'"
That very night the servant woke her master up in a fright and said: “Master of all masters, get out of your barnacle and put on your squibs and crackers. For white-faced simminy has got a spark of hot cockalorum on its tail, and unless you get some pondalorum high topper mountain will be all on hot cockalorum.” … That's all.
Naquela mesma noite a criada acordou seu patrão assustada e disse: "Patrão de todos os patrões, saia da sua concha e vista suas pipocas e traques. Pois carinha-branca pegou uma faísca de quente-chispa no rabo, e a não ser que você traga lagoalonga, montanha-mais-alta vai ficar toda em quente-chispa." … É isso.
