The Elves and the Shoemaker

There was once a shoemaker, who worked very hard and was very honest: but still he could not earn enough to live upon; and at last all he had in the world was gone, save just leather enough to make one pair of shoes.

Había una vez un zapatero que trabajaba muy duro y era muy honrado; pero aun así no lograba ganar lo suficiente para vivir; y al final todo lo que tenía en el mundo se había acabado, salvo justo el cuero necesario para hacer un par de zapatos.

Then he cut his leather out, all ready to make up the next day, meaning to rise early in the morning to his work. His conscience was clear and his heart light amidst all his troubles; so he went peaceably to bed, left all his cares to Heaven, and soon fell asleep. In the morning after he had said his prayers, he sat himself down to his work; when, to his great wonder, there stood the shoes all ready made, upon the table.

Entonces cortó el cuero, dejándolo listo para coserlo al día siguiente, con la intención de levantarse temprano por la mañana para ponerse a trabajar. Tenía la conciencia tranquila y el corazón ligero pese a todas sus penurias; así que se fue a dormir en paz, dejó todas sus preocupaciones al Cielo y pronto se quedó dormido. The good man knew not what to say or think at such an odd thing happening. He looked at the workmanship; there was not one false stitch in the whole job; all was so neat and true, that it was quite a masterpiece.

El buen hombre no supo qué decir ni qué pensar ante cosa tan extraña. Examinó la obra; no había ni una sola puntada mal hecha en todo el trabajo; todo estaba tan pulcro y perfecto que era una verdadera obra maestra.

The same day a customer came in, and the shoes suited him so well that he willingly paid a price higher than usual for them; and the poor shoemaker, with the money, bought leather enough to make two pairs more. In the evening he cut out the work, and went to bed early, that he might get up and begin betimes next day; but he was saved all the trouble, for when he got up in the morning the work was done ready to his hand.

Ese mismo día llegó un cliente, y los zapatos le sentaron tan bien que pagó de buena gana un precio más alto de lo habitual por ellos; y el pobre zapatero, con el dinero, compró cuero suficiente para hacer dos pares más. Por la noche cortó el trabajo y se acostó temprano, para poder levantarse y empezar a tiempo al día siguiente; pero se ahorró toda esa molestia, pues cuando se levantó por la mañana el trabajo ya estaba hecho y listo.

Soon in came buyers, who paid him handsomely for his goods, so that he bought leather enough for four pair more. He cut out the work again overnight and found it done in the morning, as before; and so it went on for some time: what was got ready in the evening was always done by daybreak, and the good man soon became thriving and well off again.

Pronto llegaron compradores, que le pagaron generosamente por sus mercancías, de modo que compró cuero suficiente para cuatro pares más. Cortó el trabajo de nuevo esa noche y lo encontró terminado por la mañana, como antes; y así siguió durante algún tiempo: lo que se dejaba preparado por la noche siempre estaba hecho al amanecer, y el buen hombre pronto volvió a prosperar y a vivir con desahogo.

One evening, about Christmas-time, as he and his wife were sitting over the fire chatting together, he said to her, ‘I should like to sit up and watch tonight, that we may see who it is that comes and does my work for me.’ The wife liked the thought; so they left a light burning, and hid themselves in a corner of the room, behind a curtain that was hung up there, and watched what would happen.

Una noche, cerca de la Navidad, mientras él y su esposa estaban sentados junto al fuego charlando, él le dijo: «Me gustaría quedarme despierto esta noche a vigilar, para ver quién es el que viene y hace mi trabajo por mí». A la esposa le gustó la idea; así que dejaron una vela encendida y se escondieron en un rincón del cuarto, detrás de una cortina que colgaba allí, y esperaron a ver qué sucedía.

As soon as it was midnight, there came in two little naked dwarfs; and they sat themselves upon the shoemaker’s bench, took up all the work that was cut out, and began to ply with their little fingers, stitching and rapping and tapping away at such a rate, that the shoemaker was all wonder, and could not take his eyes off them. And on they went, till the job was quite done, and the shoes stood ready for use upon the table. This was long before daybreak; and then they bustled away as quick as lightning.

En cuanto llegó la medianoche, entraron dos pequeños duendes desnudos; y se sentaron en el banco del zapatero, tomaron todo el trabajo que estaba cortado y se pusieron a trabajar con sus deditos, cosiendo y golpeteando y taconeando a tal velocidad, que el zapatero se quedó pasmado y no pudo apartar los ojos de ellos. Y así siguieron, hasta que el trabajo quedó completamente terminado, y los zapatos quedaron listos sobre la mesa. Esto fue mucho antes del amanecer; y entonces se marcharon apresurados, veloces como un rayo.

The next day the wife said to the shoemaker. ‘These little wights have made us rich, and we ought to be thankful to them, and do them a good turn if we can. I am quite sorry to see them run about as they do; and indeed it is not very decent, for they have nothing upon their backs to keep off the cold. I’ll tell you what, I will make each of them a shirt, and a coat and waistcoat, and a pair of pantaloons into the bargain; and do you make each of them a little pair of shoes.’

Al día siguiente la esposa le dijo al zapatero: «Estos duendecillos nos han hecho ricos, y deberíamos estarles agradecidos y hacerles un favor si podemos. Me da mucha pena verlos correr por ahí como lo hacen; y la verdad es que no es muy decente, pues no llevan nada encima para protegerse del frío. Te diré una cosa: yo le haré a cada uno una camisa, un abrigo y un chaleco, y además un par de pantalones; y tú hazles a cada uno un pequeño par de zapatos».

The thought pleased the good cobbler very much; and one evening, when all the things were ready, they laid them on the table, instead of the work that they used to cut out, and then went and hid themselves, to watch what the little elves would do.

La idea le agradó mucho al buen zapatero; y una noche, cuando todas las cosas estuvieron listas, las pusieron sobre la mesa, en lugar del trabajo que solían dejar cortado, y luego fueron a esconderse, para ver qué harían los pequeños duendes.

About midnight in they came, dancing and skipping, hopped round the room, and then went to sit down to their work as usual; but when they saw the clothes lying for them, they laughed and chuckled, and seemed mightily delighted.

Hacia la medianoche entraron ellos, bailando y brincando, dieron saltos por toda la habitación, y luego fueron a sentarse a su trabajo como de costumbre; pero cuando vieron la ropa allí dispuesta para ellos, se rieron a carcajadas y parecían enormemente encantados.

Then they dressed themselves in the twinkling of an eye, and danced and capered and sprang about, as merry as could be; till at last they danced out at the door, and away over the green.

Entonces se vistieron en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, y bailaron y brincaron y saltaron por todas partes, tan alegres como podían estar; hasta que por fin salieron bailando por la puerta y se perdieron por el prado.

The good couple saw them no more; but everything went well with them from that time forward, as long as they lived.

La buena pareja nunca más los volvió a ver; pero desde entonces todo les fue bien, mientras vivieron.
