The Punishment of Loki

When Loki was driven out by the mighty Thor from Aegir's palace-hall he knew that he could never again be allowed to come among the gods in Asgard. Many times had this mischievous fire-god brought trouble and sorrow to the Aesir, but now he had done the most cruel deed of all, he had slain Baldur the Good, and had driven all light and joy from Asgard.

Quando Loki foi expulso pelo poderoso Thor do salão-palácio de Aegir, ele sabia que nunca mais poderia ser permitido entre os deuses em Asgard. Muitas vezes esse travesso deus do fogo tinha trazido problemas e tristeza aos Aesir, mas agora ele tinha feito a mais cruel de todas as ações: havia matado Baldur, o Bom, e tinha afastado toda luz e alegria de Asgard.

Far away he fled, among the mountains, hoping that no one would find him there; and near a lovely mountain stream he built for himself a hut with four doors looking north, east, south, and west, so that if the wise Allfather, on his high air throne in Asgard, should see him, and send messengers to punish him, the watchful Loki could see them coming and escape by the opposite door.

Ele fugiu para longe, entre as montanhas, esperando que ninguém o encontrasse ali; e perto de um lindo riacho de montanha, construiu para si uma cabana com quatro portas voltadas para o norte, leste, sul e oeste, para que, se o sábio Pai-de-Todos, em seu alto trono aéreo em Asgard, o visse, e enviasse mensageiros para castigá-lo, o vigilante Loki pudesse vê-los chegar e escapar pela porta oposta.

He spent most of the days and nights thinking how he could get away from the Aesir. "If I ran to the stream and turned myself into a fish," he thought, "I wonder if they could catch me. I could keep out of the way of a hook; but then there are nets; Aegir's wife has a wonderful thing like a net, for catching fish, and that would be far worse than a hook!"

Ele passava a maior parte dos dias e das noites pensando em como poderia escapar dos Aesir. "Se eu correr até o riacho e me transformar em peixe," pensava ele, "será que eles conseguiriam me pegar? Eu conseguiria escapar de um anzol; mas então há redes; a esposa de Aegir tem uma coisa maravilhosa parecida com uma rede, para pescar, e isso seria muito pior do que um anzol!"

When Loki thought of the net, he began to wonder how it was made, and the more he thought, the more he wished he could make one so as to see how a fish could keep from getting caught in it.

Quando Loki pensou na rede, começou a se perguntar como ela era feita, e quanto mais pensava, mais desejava conseguir fazer uma para ver como um peixe poderia escapar de ficar preso nela.

He sat down by the fire in his little hut, took a piece of cord and began to make a fish-net. He had nearly finished it when, looking up through the open door, he saw three of the Aesir in the distance, coming toward his hut. Loki well knew that they were coming to catch him, and, quickly throwing his net into the fire, he ran to the stream, changed himself into a beautiful spotted salmon, and leaped into the water.

Ele se sentou junto ao fogo em sua pequena cabana, pegou um pedaço de corda e começou a fazer uma rede de pesca. Já tinha quase terminado quando, olhando através da porta aberta, viu três dos Aesir ao longe, vindo em direção à sua cabana. Loki sabia bem que vinham para capturá-lo, e, jogando rapidamente sua rede no fogo, correu até o riacho, transformou-se num belo salmão pintado, e saltou na água.

A moment later the three gods entered the hut, and one of them spied the fish-net burning in the fire. "See!" cried he, "Loki must have been making this net to catch fish; he always was a good fisherman, and now this is just what we want for catching him!"

Um momento depois os três deuses entraram na cabana, e um deles avistou a rede de pesca queimando no fogo. "Vejam!" gritou ele, "Loki deve ter feito esta rede para pescar; ele sempre foi um bom pescador, e agora é exatamente disso que precisamos para capturá-lo!"

So they snatched the last bit of the net from the fire, and by looking at it found out how to make another, which they took with them to the bank of the stream.

Então eles arrancaram o último pedaço da rede do fogo, e observando-o, descobriram como fazer outra, que levaram consigo até a margem do riacho.

The first time the net was put into the water, Loki hid between two rocks, and the net was so light that it floated past him; but the next time it had a heavy stone weight, which made it sink down, till Loki saw he could not get away unless he could leap over the net. He did this, but Thor, seeing him, waded out into the stream, where he threw the net again, so that Loki must jump a second time, or else go on out into the deep sea.

Da primeira vez que a rede foi colocada na água, Loki se escondeu entre duas pedras, e a rede era tão leve que flutuou por cima dele; mas na vez seguinte tinha um peso de pedra pesado, que a fez afundar, até que Loki viu que não conseguiria escapar a menos que pulasse por cima da rede. Ele fez isso, mas Thor, vendo-o, entrou no riacho, onde jogou a rede de novo, de modo que Loki teve que pular uma segunda vez, ou então seguir para o mar profundo.

As he leaped, Thor stooped and caught him in his hand, but the fish was so slippery that Thor could hardly hold it. In the struggle the salmon's tail was pinched so tightly by the thunder-god's strong fingers that it was drawn out to a point, and the old stories say that is why salmon tails are so pointed ever since.

Enquanto pulava, Thor se abaixou e o pegou na mão, mas o peixe era tão escorregadio que Thor mal conseguia segurá-lo. Na luta, a cauda do salmão foi apertada tão firmemente pelos dedos fortes do deus do trovão que ficou puxada em ponta, e as velhas histórias dizem que é por isso que as caudas dos salmões são tão pontudas desde então.

Thus was Loki caught in his own trap, and dreadful was his punishment. The Aesir chained him to a high rock, and placed a great, poisonous serpent, hanging over the cliff above his head.

Assim Loki foi pego em sua própria armadilha, e terrível foi seu castigo. Os Aesir o acorrentaram a uma alta rocha, e colocaram uma grande e venenosa serpente, pendurada sobre o penhasco acima de sua cabeça.

If it had not been for Loki's good, faithful wife, he would have died of the poison that dropped from the snake's mouth. She watched by her husband, holding a cup above him to catch the poison. Only when she had to turn aside to empty the cup did the drops fall upon Loki; then they gave him such terrible pain that he shook the earth with his struggles, and the people in Midgard fled from the dreadful earthquake, in Iceland the great geysers, springs of hot water, burst through the earth, and in the south-lands burning ashes and lava poured down the mountain-sides.

Se não fosse pela boa e fiel esposa de Loki, ele teria morrido do veneno que pingava da boca da cobra. Ela vigiava junto ao marido, segurando uma taça acima dele para recolher o veneno. Só quando ela tinha que se virar para esvaziar a taça é que as gotas caíam sobre Loki; então elas lhe causavam uma dor tão terrível que ele sacudia a terra com seus espasmos, e as pessoas em Midgard fugiam do terrível terremoto; na Islândia os grandes gêiseres, fontes de água quente, irrompiam através da terra, e nas terras do sul cinzas ardentes e lava desciam pelas encostas das montanhas.

There, chained to the cliff, the cruel, mischievous Loki was to lie until the Twilight of the gods, the dark day of Ragnarök, when all the mighty evil monsters and beasts would get free, and the terrible battle be fought between them and the gods of Asgard.

Ali, acorrentado ao penhasco, o cruel e travesso Loki ficaria deitado até o Crepúsculo dos deuses, o dia sombrio do Ragnarök, quando todos os poderosos monstros e bestas do mal se libertariam, e a terrível batalha seria travada entre eles e os deuses de Asgard.
