The Magpie's Nest

Once upon a time when pigs spoke rhyme And monkeys chewed tobacco, And hens took snuff to make them tough, And ducks went quack, quack, quack, O!

Era uma vez, quando os porcos falavam em rimas E os macacos mascavam tabaco, E as galinhas cheiravam rapé para ficarem durinhas, E os patos faziam quá, quá, quá, ó!

All the birds of the air came to the magpie and asked her to teach them how to build nests. For the magpie is the cleverest bird of all at building nests. So she put all the birds round her and began to show them how to do it. First of all she took some mud and made a sort of round cake with it.

Todos os pássaros do ar vieram até a pega e pediram que ela lhes ensinasse a construir ninhos. Pois a pega é a mais esperta de todos os pássaros em construir ninhos. Então ela reuniu todos os pássaros ao redor dela e começou a mostrar-lhes como se fazia. Primeiro de tudo, ela pegou um pouco de lama e fez com ela uma espécie de bolo redondo.

“Oh, that's how it's done,” said the thrush; and away it flew, and so that's how thrushes build their nests.

"Ah, é assim que se faz," disse o tordo; e voou para longe, e é assim que os tordos constroem seus ninhos até hoje.

Then the magpie took some twigs and arranged them round in the mud.

Então a pega pegou alguns gravetos e os arrumou ao redor da lama.

“Now I know all about it,” says the blackbird, and off he flew; and that's how the blackbirds make their nests to this very day.

"Agora já sei tudo," disse o melro, e voou embora; e é assim que os melros fazem seus ninhos até hoje.

Then the magpie put another layer of mud over the twigs.

Depois a pega pôs outra camada de lama sobre os gravetos.

“Oh that's quite obvious,” said the wise owl, and away it flew; and owls have never made better nests since.

"Ah, isso é bem óbvio," disse a coruja sábia, e voou para longe; e as corujas nunca mais fizeram ninhos melhores desde então.

After this the magpie took some twigs and twined them round the outside.

Depois disso, a pega pegou alguns gravetos e os entrelaçou ao redor da parte externa.

“The very thing!” said the sparrow, and off he went; so sparrows make rather slovenly nests to this day.

"É exatamente isso!" disse o pardal, e foi embora; por isso os pardais fazem ninhos bem desleixados até hoje.

Well, then Madge Magpie took some feathers and stuff and lined the nest very comfortably with it.

Bem, então Madge Pega pegou penas e outros materiais e forrou o ninho bem confortavelmente com eles.

“That suits me,” cried the starling, and off it flew; and very comfortable nests have starlings.

"Isso me serve," gritou o estorninho, e voou para longe; e os estorninhos têm ninhos bem confortáveis.

So it went on, every bird taking away some knowledge of how to build nests, but, none of them waiting to the end. Meanwhile Madge Magpie went on working and working without, looking up till the only bird that remained was the turtle-dove, and that hadn't paid any attention all along, but only kept on saying its silly cry “Take two, Taffy, take two-o-o-o.”

E assim foi indo, cada pássaro levando algum conhecimento sobre como construir ninhos, mas nenhum deles esperando até o final. Enquanto isso, Madge Pega continuava trabalhando e trabalhando sem levantar os olhos, até que o único pássaro que restava era a rolinha, que não tinha prestado atenção em nada o tempo todo, mas só ficava repetindo seu grito bobo "Pegue dois, Taffy, pegue dois-o-o-o."

At last the magpie heard this just as she was putting a twig across. So she said: “One's enough.”

Por fim a pega ouviu isso justamente quando estava colocando um graveto atravessado. Então ela disse: "Um basta."

But the turtle-dove kept on saying: “Take two, Taffy, take two-o-o-o.”

Mas a rolinha continuou dizendo: "Pegue dois, Taffy, pegue dois-o-o-o."

Then the magpie got angry and said: “One's enough I tell you.”

Então a pega ficou zangada e disse: "Um basta, eu já disse."

Still the turtle-dove cried: “Take two, Taffy, take two-o-o-o.”

Ainda assim a rolinha gritava: "Pegue dois, Taffy, pegue dois-o-o-o."

At last, and at last, the magpie looked up and saw nobody near her but the silly turtle-dove, and then she got rare angry and flew away and refused to tell the birds how to build nests again. And that is why different birds build their nests differently.

Por fim, finalmente, a pega olhou para cima e não viu ninguém perto dela além da tola rolinha, e então ficou realmente furiosa e voou para longe, recusando-se a ensinar os pássaros a construir ninhos nunca mais. E é por isso que os diferentes pássaros constroem seus ninhos de formas diferentes.
