In a city where every window broadcasts its owner's feelings, one archivist stops hiding hers.

In the city of Aereth, every window was made of memory-glass, and the law was simple: a citizen's walls displayed, to any passer-by, whatever that citizen had most recently felt. Grief clouded the panes grey; joy set them ablaze. Privacy had been abolished a generation ago, in the name of a perfect and transparent society.

Na cidade de Aereth, todas as janelas eram feitas de vidro-memória, e a lei era simples: as paredes de um cidadão exibiam, a qualquer transeunte, o que aquele cidadão houvesse sentido mais recentemente. A tristeza deixava os vidros cinzentos; a alegria os incendiava. A privacidade fora abolida uma geração antes, em nome de uma sociedade perfeita e transparente.

Sable, an archivist, had spent her life cataloguing the moods of strangers, and had grown expert at feeling nothing at all.

Sable, uma arquivista, havia passado a vida catalogando os humores de estranhos, e se tornara especialista em não sentir absolutamente nada.

Then the glass in her own apartment began to malfunction. Where it should have shown her practised emptiness, it flickered instead with colours she did not recognise as her own — a restless amber, a stubborn green.

Então o vidro de seu próprio apartamento começou a apresentar defeitos. Onde deveria mostrar seu vazio bem ensaiado, cintilava, em vez disso, com cores que ela não reconhecia como suas — um âmbar inquieto, um verde teimoso.

She consulted the engineers, who found no fault in the mechanism. The fault, they implied delicately, was in her. Somewhere beneath the surface she had been cultivating, something unsanctioned had taken root.

Ela consultou os engenheiros, que não encontraram falha alguma no mecanismo. A falha, insinuaram com delicadeza, estava nela. Em algum lugar sob a superfície que ela vinha cultivando, algo não autorizado tinha criado raízes.

For the first time in years, Sable was curious about what she contained.

She stopped repairing the glass. She let it show whatever it wished, and she watched, as a stranger might, the slow return of a self she had disowned.

Ela parou de consertar o vidro. Deixou que ele mostrasse o que quisesse, e observou, como faria uma estranha, o lento retorno de um eu que havia renegado.

Her neighbours were scandalised, and the council issued warnings. But others, quietly, began to let their own windows drift out of regulation, until whole streets glowed with the unruly, contradictory light of people who had remembered how to feel.

Seus vizinhos ficaram escandalizados, e o conselho emitiu advertências. Mas outros, silenciosamente, começaram a deixar suas próprias janelas fugirem da regulamentação, até que ruas inteiras brilhassem com a luz rebelde e contraditória de pessoas que haviam se lembrado de como sentir.

The transparent city, it turned out, had never truly been transparent. It had only been afraid. And fear, unlike glass, cannot be legislated into clarity.

A cidade transparente, ao que se revelou, nunca havia sido de fato transparente. Fora apenas medrosa. E o medo, ao contrário do vidro, não pode ser legislado até se tornar clareza.
