Why Her Friend Stopped Texting

Ingrid worries that she upset her best friend Cass, until she finds out the real reason behind the silence.
Ingrid and Cass are best friends. They usually text every day after school.
This week, Cass doesn't answer any of Ingrid's messages. Ingrid starts to worry.
"Did I do something wrong?" Ingrid asks herself. She thinks back over their last conversation.
On Wednesday, Ingrid sees Cass in the hallway. Cass walks by without saying hello.
Ingrid feels hurt. She decides to ask Cass directly instead of guessing.
After school, Ingrid finds Cass at her locker. "Are you mad at me?" Ingrid asks quietly.
Cass looks surprised. "No, not at all," she says. "Why do you think that?"
"You stopped answering my texts," Ingrid says. "And you walked past me without saying hi."
Cass sighs. "My phone broke on Monday," she says. "I didn't even see you in the hallway. I'm sorry."
"Oh," Ingrid says. "I thought it was something I did."
"Never," Cass says. "It's still broken. My mom is going to buy a new one this weekend."
Ingrid laughs with relief. "I'm glad it's nothing bad," she says.
"Me too," Cass says. "Now, let's talk in person until I get my phone back." They walk to the bus stop together and talk the whole way.
