The kitchen smelled warm and familiar. Astrid folded the napkins neatly. Everything felt calm and ordinary.
Then the doorbell rang unexpectedly. Astrid opened the door with surprise. Her old friend from college stood there.
"I was in town for one night," she said. Astrid hugged her friend and invited her in. She quickly grabbed one more plate.
Lars added more potatoes to the pot. He made the dinner stretch for five people. He set an extra chair at the table.
